Savannah State GEAR UP Partners with MasteryPrep

Savannah State University GEAR UP students are gaining familiarity with both the ACT and SAT standardized tests this summer.

High school students through the Savannah State University GEAR UP program are gaining familiarity with both the ACT and SAT standardized tests this summer by participating in MasteryPrep Boot Camps, held on the university’s campus in June and July.

MasteryPrep delivers more than 1,000 boot camps to 75,000 students each year on the ACT, SAT, WorkKeys and TSIA2. This summer, MasteryPrep has instructed more than 150 boot camps nationwide.

“We have been excited to work with MasteryPrep to help our program’s high school students become more familiar with the ACT and SAT - understanding the content they have to grasp to perform well on both tests and also strategies they can use on the real tests in the upcoming school year. It’s important they gain the exposure to both tests that way they can begin to determine their best pathway for earning high test scores and opportunities to attend college.”

A Savannah State GEAR UP Student

MasteryPrep partners with GEAR UPs (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) at colleges and universities across the nation to level the playing field by providing quality test preparation to thousands of low-income, first-generation families who traditionally cannot access premium college readiness supports.

These partnerships with federally funded college access programs aim to increase students’ academic performance and preparation for postsecondary education; increase high school graduation rates, number of students receiving scholarships and gaining entrance into four-year institutions; and increase students and their families’ knowledge of postsecondary education options, preparation and financing.

GEAR UP is unique from other federal pre-college programs because it requires in-kind commitment from local community partners. For example, in Savannah, GEAR UPs primary partners include Savannah State University, Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools, Parent University, St. Joseph’s/Candler Hospital and Explore Colleges.

Savannah State University GEAR UP serves 1,000 high school students from Alfred Ely Beach High School and School of Liberal Studies at Savannah High School. Both have above a 96 percent minority enrollment, making it critical for programs and resources such as MasteryPrep’s boot camps to take place.

Jackson said Savannah State’s experience with a MasteryPrep PSAT Boot Camp spurred the partnership to host the ACT and SAT versions. A parent, whose daughter participated in the PSAT boot camp and earned a high score on the PSAT, registered her daughter this summer.

“MasteryPrep has instructors who are knowledgeable, caring, and the manners in which they teach are easily relatable to our students. Strategies like process of elimination help them grasp why multiple-choice answers are wrong, and then they’re more confident when they select the right answer. The materials are also priceless; they can use them, keep them, and refer to them to prepare for the tests.”

Savannah State University puts on events for high school students and families that focus on counseling, academics, mentoring, study skills, cultural activities, financial aid, among others. “Our GEAR UP program has been so beneficial over the years to help the young people of our community receive opportunities to be able to attend college, graduate in postsecondary education and enter the workforce as doctors, lawyers, nurses and professionals of that nature,” Jackson said.
