High-Impact Intercom Announcements For Testing Season

High-Impact Intercom Announcements For Testing Season

We talk all the time about how teachers can embed test preparation into the classroom. But principals can get in on the prep, too! Embed test preparation into the daily school routine with these high-impact intercom announcements.

1. Get proper sleep

Our big test day is coming up next week. Did you know that when you lose sleep, you lose intelligence? A week of bad sleep can lower your IQ by 15 points or more until you catch up on your rest. Believe it or not, one of the best ways to prepare for the test is to catch some zzz’s. So let’s be sure to get 8 hours or more of sleep each night this week.

2. Process of elimination

You’ll all be taking a standardized test next week, and I wanted to remind you that if you get to a question you’re stuck on, that doesn’t mean it’s over. With a multiple choice question, you can use the process of elimination. Get judgy. Ask yourself—what’s wrong with these choices. Figure out what answers have problems. If you know every choice is wrong but one, that’s the same as getting it right!

3. Double check

Have you ever made a careless error on a test? You do all the work right, but then at the end pick the wrong choice? That’s happened to everyone. But it doesn’t have to happen next week when you take the [test]. Why? Because there’s enough time for you to double-check your work. Check once that your evidence matches up, that you solved it the right way. Check again that you selected the answer you want, the one that actually answers the question. If it’s worth answering, it’s worth answering right.

4. No blanks

Next week is the [test], and I want to give you a tip that’s very simple to apply and can make a big difference on your score. There is no penalty for guessing on this test. If you have no idea how to answer a question, just mark your best guess and move on. Never leave an answer blank. You’ll hit zero percent of the pitches you don’t swing at. The last thing you want is for a someone who doesn’t work as hard as you to score better because you left blanks and they didn’t.

5. Take your time (for untimed tests)

Tomorrow is our big test day, and I have one more tip for you: take your time. This test is completely untimed. There is no reason to rush. Don’t worry. If you go slow, if you answer thoroughly, the world isn’t going to move on without you. Your teachers aren’t going to lock you into the classroom. We want you to take all the time you need for you to feel confident that you’ve given your best answer to every question. This isn’t a race. You don’t get an award for finishing first. So give yourself the time you need to do your best.

6. Mark and move (for timed tests)

Tomorrow is our big test day, and I have one more tip for you: this is a timed test. If you let yourself get bogged down on one question, it’s going to make it really hard to concentrate and finish the rest of the test in time. If you start working on a question that feels like it’s too tough or is going to take a long time, don’t sweat it. The next question is probably easier. Take that hard question, mark it so you can come back to it, make your best guess, and move on. No worries. If you save all the toughest questions for the end, you’re in good shape because you won’t run out of time on easy questions you can get points for.
