The best way to improve your score on any ACT section is to learn the key features of each test. Each section has specific tips and tricks that work best; the ACT science test is no different.

Below, we have four essential tips that will show you the best approach to take on the ACT science test. Applying these tips to your test-taking strategies will help you complete the science section in time and get you closer to your desired score.

Tip #1: Scan the Figures First
Don’t jump to the questions right away. First scan the figures, graphs, and tables to get a feel for the experiments or studies. This will give you an idea of what to focus on when you do read the passage.

Tip #2: Skim the Passages
Taking too long to read the passages can cause you to fall behind in time and never catch up. Just skim the passages and only go back for a more thorough reading if you need specific information to answer the questions.

Tip #3: Look at the Figure the Question Asks About
Questions on the ACT science test often direct to a particular graph or figure. For example, a question may ask something like, “Based on Experiment 1…” or “According to Figure 2…” When you see this, go straight to the experiment or figure and find your answer.

Tip #4: Read Between the Lines
Sometimes a question will require you to gather more information that isn’t in the passage or figures. For example, you may be asked for the stopping distance of a train traveling at 65 mph, but the graph only shows speeds and stopping distances of 50, 60, and 70 mph. To answer the question, you have to find the point that would logically fall between 60 and 70 mph.

These tips have been proven to help students successfully take the ACT science test and help improve their scores. Learn these tips, apply them to your study and test-taking, and you will do better.
