Texas-Based Early College High School Improves TSIA2 Passage Rate

  • November 8, 2024

Few moments are more rewarding than seeing a student’s future change when they qualify for college. And at a school with a high percentage of economically disadvantaged and at-risk students, every available resource plays a vital role in helping them overcome those obstacles.

Jeanne Gravitt, Dean of Advanced Studies at La Vega Early College High School in Texas, recalled one student with a difficult home life—“very smart but lacking confidence,” she said—who had struggled to pass the TSIA2 since middle school. After practicing daily with MasteryPrep resources, the student improved her score by 27 points and finally passed.

That success, Gravitt noted, would likely break a generational cycle within the student’s family and showed how MasteryPrep is more than just test prep—it helps students believe in themselves and realize what they’re capable of achieving.

  • TSIA Passage Rate Jumps 28% Since MasteryPrep Partnership

La Vega ECHS is now seeing strong results in its third year partnering with MasteryPrep. Since implementing MasteryPrep’s TSIA2 resources, the school has achieved a 28% increase in overall passing scores, with particularly notable gains in ELAR pass rates.

MasteryPrep's Partnership with La Vega Early College High School

The Class of 2025 had 88% (of 58) of its students pass the ELAR (English Language Arts Reading) score requirements, compared with 72% for the same class in 2024, and compared with 67% for the same class in 2023.
The Class of 2026 had 75% (of 57) of its students pass the ELAR score requirements in 2024, compared with 58% of the same class meeting the ELAR score requirements in 2023.

“More students are passing the TSIA2, and the results have given us real momentum with the MasteryPrep program,” Gravitt says.

She recalls one senior who improved his TSIA2 score by 42 points. “When we asked what made the difference, he said the real exam felt almost identical to the practice he did with MasteryPrep. That’s a game changer—to have a resource that truly prepares students for what to expect on test day.”

The Texas Success Initiative Assessment 2.0 (TSIA2) is the assessment instrument used to determine college readiness for non-exempt students, as required by the Texas Success Initiative. With HB 3 in effect, helping more students meet the necessary TSI benchmarks is critical for schools to achieve higher Outcomes Bonuses and meet accountability standards.

In 2015, the Texas Education Agency designated La Vega High School—based in Waco, Texas—as an Early College High School (ECHS) with a “school within a school” model. These innovative programs give students who are least likely to attend college the opportunity to earn both a high school diploma and up to 60 college credit hours before graduation.

La Vega High School serves roughly 850 students overall, with about 270 participating in the ECHS program. The student body is 92% economically disadvantaged and 70% at-risk. Within the ECHS, dual credit is provided at no cost to students, and academic, social support, and college readiness resources are implemented to reduce barriers to higher education.

“I am a proud La Vega High School graduate in a district that removes any barriers students may have to reach their full potential. We invest in our students,” Gravitt says. “Passing the TSIA2 is a requirement, so we needed to invest in the best resource for our students. MasteryPrep is leaps and bounds above anything else on the market when it comes to college and career readiness.”

In addition to ECHS students training with MasteryPrep resources for the TSIA2, the high school has also invested in MasteryPrep resources for the ACT and STAAR as well as The College Playbook, among others.

  • Students Practice Every Day

Gravitt compares test preparation to athletics: if a football player practices every day before the big game, students should approach standardized testing the same way.

“One of the best practices that has led to our score improvements is making it a priority to integrate test content directly into the curriculum of our core courses,” she says. “We had MasteryPrep team members come in and help us with that implementation. That consistent practice is critical.”

With the Curriculum for the TSIA2, which aligns each chapter to TEKS and TSIA2 standards, teachers can select lessons that help students move from struggling to succeeding. They incorporate test content into daily bell ringers or regular lesson plans.

“It’s all very user-friendly, and teachers can consistently track student progress,” Gravitt says. “Our teachers love the program. They understand that they’re teaching both to the test and to the curriculum standards.”

Another best practice has been La Vega’s investment in professional development. The ECHS uses a combination of in-house instructors and MasteryPrep instructors to teach test content. When a MasteryPrep instructor is on campus, a La Vega teacher typically shadows the session to deepen their understanding of the material, strategies, and instructional methods.

“MasteryPrep instructors are engaging and amazing,” Gravitt says. “When someone can connect with my students within the first 20 minutes, hold their attention, and deliver test-taking strategies along with high-quality instruction—that’s the whole package.”
