MasteryPrep TSIA2 Prep Solutions Boost Texas High School’s Early College Success

W.W. Samuell Early College High School, where enrollment is contingent on TSI eligibility, credits MasteryPrep with helping to improve student retention.

  • February 13, 2025

Equipped with lesson plans, daily bell ringers, and test-prep workshops for both teachers and students, W.W. Samuell Early College High School in Dallas began implementing MasteryPrep’s comprehensive products and platform in the 2022-23 school year to prepare students for the Texas Success Initiative Assessment 2.0 (TSIA2) placement tests.

In the Early College program, students complete college-level coursework while working toward their high school diploma. In 2022-23, school leaders faced a challenge: they were struggling to retain students, especially between Grades 10 and 11, whose TSI status kept them from being enrolled in dual credit courses. The school was able to change that by giving students an extra semester to complete TSI requirements and by partnering with MasteryPrep.

Since 2023, the Early College High School has seen a nearly 68% increase in its junior and senior enrollment, from 108 to 181 in 2025.

“It’s the teacher prep book; it’s the student book; it’s the boot camp book; it’s the online platform; it’s the practice test—I know everything that we do TSIA2 is going to be MasteryPrep,” says Jason Jewell, former Assistant Principal at W.W. Samuell Early College High School.

  • About W.W. Samuell Early College High School

W.W. Samuell High School, with more than 1,700 students, is a member of the Dallas Independent School District. In 2012, W.W. Samuell Early College High School was established within the high school.

Early College, which enrolls close to 300 students, is a tuition-free public school for students in Grades 9-12 that affords students the opportunity to complete 60 hours of college coursework and earn a High School Diploma, plus either an Associate of Science degree or an Associate of Arts in Teaching in four years at no cost to the student.

Early College prepares high school students for the TSIA2, a series of placement tests for students enrolling in Texas public colleges and universities that determine college-level readiness in reading, writing, and math.

“We are really focused on getting students able to pass that exam because that was the number one barrier to student success in our program—their pass or failure rate on the TSIA2,” Jewell says.

School leaders at the Early College High School credit MasteryPrep’s TSIA2 test-prep solutions with helping to improve student retention prior to Grade 11. Since 2022-23, they have implemented bell ringers (daily warm-up exercises), the online MasteryPrep platform for adaptive practice testing, a synchronous and asynchronous course curriculum, MasteryPrep Boot Camps, and professional development workshops for teachers.

  • MasteryPrep Boot Camp Instills Early Buy-In

In its first year with MasteryPrep, Early College held a full-day Boot Camp for freshmen, followed by a half-day for sophomores. The school had been struggling to retain students between Grades 10 and 11 due to a lack of TSI preparedness, which drove school leaders to hold the Boot Camp for the TSIA2 and then pursue a more measured rollout of MasteryPrep’s programs and services.

The Boot Camp is a high-impact, strategy-focused workshop covering key content, test-taking techniques, and effective guessing strategies. For the rest of the week, students and teachers worked through MasteryPrep materials, and students took a practice test to gauge what they learned.

“What I think was the most impactful was just being willing to sit down and say [to our teachers] that this is something that changes our program, and this is a struggle that we have every year,” Jewell says. “I know it takes a lot for me to ask you to give up a week of your instruction, but at the same time, this is our priority. This is what we do. And if we don’t hit these benchmarks, then we’re consistently going to be behind the ball.”

After holding the sophomore MasteryPrep Boot Camp for the TSIA2, the Early College program’s junior enrollment jumped from 56 eligible students in 2023 to 85 in 2024. In 2025, the Early College now has a junior enrollment of 105.

“In utilizing MasterPrep in this way, along with a more measured rollout of daily MasteryPrep lessons in advisory, we were able to achieve a significant increase in retention of students prior to 11th grade,” the school said in a statement.

  • Mastery-Based Curriculum Combines Online Platform with Teacher Manuals
The MasteryPrep teacher manuals also left an impression on the school, Jewell says. These are included in the MasteryPrep Curriculum, the first and only mastery-based TSIA2 prep curriculum aligned with TEKS (Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills). W.W. Samuell received 90 hours of synchronous curriculum supports for Math and ELAR, 30 hours (and 5,000+ videos) of online content, more than 300 practice items, answer explanations, PowerPoints, teacher guides, and teacher manuals. This content was all integrated seamlessly into core classes, homeroom, enrichment, or RTI periods.

Previously, when gathering different TSIA2 prep resources from different companies, Jewell says he would give teachers student guides and ask them to essentially teach themselves the material, then take the time to teach it back to the students.

“They’ve got 99 problems and trying to dissect and understand TSIA2 is quite a big task, so they did the best they could, but what we were doing was not effective,” Jewell says. “The specificity of the MasteryPrep teacher edition is what really changed things for me.”

As a supplement to the MasteryPrep Curriculum, Jewell says teachers implement bell ringers during the first 10 minutes of some classes and integrate scripted TSIA2 lessons into subject curriculum.

“There are a lot of online platforms these days that take the teacher out of the conversation, and that wasn’t something we wanted because our teachers had to be invested in figuring out where students were going and how we were going to get them there,” Jewell says.

  • Advisory Classes and Expansion to Juniors Increases Retention

The Early College created advisory classes where teachers would work through the TSIA2 materials with students who were not TSI-met, which “has been impactful for us,” Jewell says.

Together, teachers and students analyze practice test diagnostics, and teachers encourage students to use the online platform to improve upon those weaknesses. Through MasteryPrep’s Practice Testing & Analysis and Online Course offerings, students start with an adaptive practice test, followed by interactive online curriculum modules. These include engaging activities and adaptive pathways, ensuring personalized learning.

“From the teacher’s perspective, MasteryPrep just takes a lot of the load off them, and from the administrator’s perspective, we all understand that we can ask our teachers to do these things without creating a large burden on them,” Jewell says. “It’s the best of both worlds where we’re actually accomplishing the goals we need with TSI but not creating undue burden on teachers.”
